Transient expression of tau in CHO cells together with cDNA for GSK-3 beta showed that GSK-3 beta increased phosphorylation of tau as recognized by a decreased mobility of tau when examined using the phosphorylation-independent antibody (Dako). When dvl-1, dvl-2, or dvl-3 was expressed, tau mobility increased relative to that of GSK-3 cotransfected cells. Tau expressed in CHO cells alone was not recognized by PHF-1, which recognizes an epitope of tau (Ser 406) although it was recognized when GSK-3 beta was also expressed, suggesting that dishevelled proteins decreased GSK-3 beta phosphorylation of tau.
