Pea3 and Erm are defined by the presence of an evolutionarily conserved Ets domain that mediates DNA binding (Sharrocks et al., 1997). FGF signaling is both necessary and sufficient for their expression (Firnberg and Neubuser, 2002; Kawakami et al., 2003; Raible and Brand, 2001; Roehl and Nusslein- Volhard, 2001), and as both have been shown to be present at regions of FGF signaling in several developmental contexts, they are thought to be general transcriptional targets of FGF signaling (Raible and Brand, 2001; Roehl and Nusslein- Volhard, 2001). Moreover, it has been demonstrated in vitro that DNA binding of Pea3 and Erm to their targets is activated following phosphorylation by MAPK/ERKs (Janknecht et al., 1996; Munchberg and Steinbeisser, 1999; O'Hagan et al., 1996). Thus, in addition to being potential transcriptional targets of FGF signaling, Pea3 and Erm function as transcriptional effectors within cells to transduce FGF signals.
